January 6 - COVID Updates
January 6, 2022,
Dear Students, Families, and Staff Members,
I am writing to you today with some additional updates on COVID-19 protocols pertaining to quarantine/isolation, contact tracing, testing, and booster shots:
The Connecticut State Department of Public Health continues to define “fully vaccinated” as “two weeks after the second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or the first dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.”
Connecticut state officials have recommended that districts discontinue routine contact tracing for in-school exposures. The rationale for this decision is based upon a number of factors such as the very low rate of in-school transmissions, the continued implementation of robust mitigation strategies in the schools, and the high number of students placed into quarantine compared to the number of those students who actually contract the virus. Hence, Rocky Hill Public Schools will no longer conduct contact tracing for in-school exposures. However, please note that the COVID-19 dashboard (located on our website) will continue to be updated on a daily basis and will continue to reflect numbers, on a school-by-school basis, for positive cases and individuals in quarantine.
Because we have discontinued contact tracing for in-school exposures, the COVID-19 dashboard will serve as the primary means of notification regarding positive cases within the schools.
For outside-of-school exposures, please note the following:
Fully vaccinated staff/students may continue with in-person learning as long as they remain asymptomatic.
Partially vaccinated or unvaccinated staff/students will be quarantined from school for five days and may return to school following the quarantine period with a negative test for COVID-19 (taken on day five or later) as long as they remain asymptomatic.
Importantly, partially vaccinated or unvaccinated students living in the same household with a positive COVID-19 case may return to school with a negative test result (after day 10) as long as they remain asymptomatic. (Previously, this was a 20-day quarantine period.)
Staff/students with any COVID-19 symptoms must isolate at home and contact the school nurse regardless of vaccination status. Individuals with symptoms should not be in school under any circumstances. Protocols/timelines for individuals with symptoms (once they resolve without the use of fever-reducing medication) do vary depending upon vaccination status and whether there was close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case; hence, the importance of consulting with the school nurse to determine the appropriate course of action.
The school district has received a limited supply of COVID-19 test kits. We are now accepting results from home testing kits. If your child has been exposed to COVID-19 or has COVID-19 symptoms and you cannot obtain a test kit at a local pharmacy, please contact the school nurse and make arrangements to pick up a test kit from the school.
Rocky Hill will continue to follow the CIAC winter sports guidance that was issued on December 22, 2021, with respect to the protocols for addressing COVID-19 within our athletic programs.
For individuals interested in obtaining a booster shot for themselves or an eligible child, Hartford Healthcare is providing boosters at a number of area locations. For more information, please click on the following link: https://hartfordhealthcare.
Thank you for your cooperation as we continue to grapple with the immense challenges posed by this evolving pandemic. Your support is greatly appreciated.
